‘Keep your hair on guys … Soya has Potential to Aid Prostate Cancer’ DETAIL: There is a wide assortment of antioxidative and anti-inflammatory substances derived from edible plants that have been reported to possess chemo-preventive and chemo-protective activities, including genistein, a principal chemo-preventive component of soy.1 Research has shown that a diet rich in soy could protect men against prostate cancer. It has already been researched to help prevent hair-loss in men. This is serious stuff, because according to Cancer Research UK one third of all cancers are thought to be linked to diet. Soy products as part of every man’s daily diet could make a huge difference. In fact, the lower frequencies of breast and prostate cancer in Asian populations in general, compared to those in Western societies have been attributed to their consumption of relatively large amounts of soy products. These functional food phytochemicals have the ability to control intracellular signalling cascades responsible for regulating cell growth and differentiation,1and research suggests that Soy isoflavones are very beneficial to help prevent prostate cancer.2 The powerful ingredient in soya beans, soy sauce, tofu and soya milk works via a little known molecule, called equoi, which is created in the intestine when soy is digested, and helps to block a hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that leads to prostate cancer. Equoi, which was first identified 20 years ago by Dr. Kenneth Setchell of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre, does not stop DHT from being made, but it does stop it functioning.3 Dr. Setchell said: “These findings are of immense clinical importance because blocking the action of the potent male hormone DHT has been one of the holy grails of the pharmaceutical industry as a strategy for treating prostate cancer and other related diseases.” This is wonderful news, because it is the same hormone DHT, a by-product of testosterone, that is implicated and normally causes male pattern baldness. So, taking natural Soy products into the male diet can also ‘keep your hair on’. COMMENT: This is another excellent reason for uncontaminated GM-Free Soy to be grown around the world. And, with prostate cancer now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in British men, resulting in 10,000 deaths a year, the curative emphasis is on diet. It may be noted that ‘Propecia’ tablets, made by MERCK, the first and only FDA-approved pill used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head), anterior mid-scalp area (middle of head), but does not appear to work for receding hairlines at the temples and is for use by men only and should not be used by women or children, contains the active ingredient ‘Finasteride’a synthetic compound, is not natural. 1 Toxicol Lett. 2004 Apr 15;150(1):43-56 ‘Chemopreventive potential of epigallocatechin gallate and genistein: evidence from edpidemiological and laboratory studies.’ Park OJ, Surh YJ, Applied Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, Hannam Uv., South Korea. 2 Nutr.
