Celebrate UK National Watercress Week 24th – 31st May 2004
“The city man thinks the simple life From: Poems by
Mary Hendriks Well you may not be able to take away your stress by buying a country farm, but you have a wonderful opportunity NOW to celebrate National Watercress Week, the start of the main British watercress season, with an ‘away day’ or a family outing (See www.watercress.co.uk). The entire Watercress Farmers’ celebration has something for everyone so join in the fun at Ropley in Hampshire. Some of the events on offer are a Victorian themed weekend, trips on the picturesque Watercress steam train, cookery demonstrations - don’t forget your notebook and pencil to collect recipes; farm tours, a “Mr Walter Cress Man” competition, street theatre and a watercress treasure hunt. This may be an ideal occasion to get your children to ‘eat their greens’. Celebrity chef Phil Vickery, father of four, has been commissioned to produce some delicious watercress recipes to encourage them with more inspirational recipes for family meals. Watercress was featured recently as a star ingredient in dishes on BBC TV’s ‘Ready Steady Cook’ (recipes on watercress website), proving how versatile watercress can be and what an ‘IN’ plant watercress really is. Check it out … there’s a chance to win a competition prize of a luxury spa break for two on a two night, three day break, to include all meals, unlimited use of the facilities, plus a massage and facial per person at any one of Champneys’ four prestigious Spa resorts – Henlow, Tring, Forest Mere and Champneys Springs. Watercress is a very healthful plant with an interesting history of medical and nutritional use. Smokers should take note, eating watercress can help to prevent lung cancer among other benefits.
